Caring for Your Veneers: How to Extend the Life of Your Flawless Smile

Caring for Your Veneers: How to Extend the Life of Your Flawless Smile

Several types of veneers are available, and their longevity depends on factors like the type and the overall quality. Generally, veneers last ten years or longer, depending on how well they are cared for.

The good news is that caring for your veneers is as simple as taking care of your overall oral health. At the Center for Implant & Esthetic Dentistry, our prosthodontist, Dr. Mahallati, and our team provide cosmetic and restorative dentistry services at our Beverly Hills, California, office.

How to care for your veneers

One of the most important things you can do to extend the life of your veneers is to practice good oral hygiene. Like your teeth and gums, your veneers are vulnerable to damage from plaque and tartar.

For optimal oral health and hygiene, brushing twice a day with a soft-bristle toothbrush and flossing daily are recommended. If you have veneers, scheduling regular dental exams and cleanings (every six months) is especially important.

In addition to staying on top of your oral health, consider these other factors when caring for your veneers:

Limit hard and sticky food and candy

Your diet plays a significant role in your oral health and longevity of your veneers. Avoid eating hard candy and avoid activities like chewing on ice or using your teeth to open bottles or packages.

Drink alcohol in moderation

Alcoholic beverages and products like mouthwash, which contain alcohol, can degrade your veneers over time, making them more vulnerable to chipping and cracking. Only drink alcohol in moderation, and avoid mouthwashes containing alcohol.

Keeping your veneers white

Veneers are a great option for treating stains and discolorations, but the same things that stain your teeth can also affect your veneers. Tobacco, red wine, coffee, tea, acidic food and drinks, sauces, and dark berries can stain them.

Manage your teeth-grinding

If you grind your teeth and clench your jaw while you sleep, your veneers can wear down over time. A night guard protects your teeth from wear-and-tear while you sleep.

Invest in a sports guard to protect your veneers from trauma and sports injuries if you play contact sports.
