How to Make the Most of Your Veneers

How to Make the Most of Your Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a versatile and minimally invasive treatment that deliver exceptional results for your smile. But to make the most of your veneers and continue to maintain your oral health, there are a few things you’ll need to do in terms of maintenance.

Our prosthodontist Dr. Ramin Mahallati and our team offer a range of restorative and cosmetic dentistry services at the Center for Implant & Esthetic Dentistry in Beverly Hills, California.

How to care for and make the most of your veneers

If you have veneers or are considering getting them in the future, here are a few tips to help you make the most of them.

Keep up with your oral hygiene

Practice optimal oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Don't forget to floss daily to remove plaque and food particles between your teeth and the veneers.

Watch out for food and drinks that stain your teeth

While veneers are stain-resistant, they can discolor over time due to your diet, just like your natural teeth. The usual culprits are coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and sauces. To protect your veneers, limit your consumption of staining foods and beverages.

That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your favorite foods. Rinse your mouth with water when you’re done, and consider using a straw to minimize contact with your veneers when possible.

Be careful when chewing

Veneers are strong, but they’re not indestructible. Avoid using your veneered teeth to bite or chew on hard objects, like ice, pens, or bottle caps, because it can damage or dislodge them.

Try to break habits, like nail biting or using your teeth as tools, to prevent stress on your veneers.

Protect your veneers during sports and physical activities

If you participate in contact sports or activities that pose a risk of impact or trauma, wear a mouthguard to protect your veneers and teeth. A custom-made mouthguard offers the best protection and ensures a comfortable fit.

Regular dental exams and cleanings

Regular dental exams and cleanings (usually every six months for most people) are essential tools for protecting your oral health and lowering your risk of gum disease.

Your dental exam is also a good opportunity to monitor the condition of your veneers, check for any signs of damage, and professionally clean your teeth to keep your veneers and natural teeth in optimal health. Your dental exam is also an opportunity for our team to address any concerns or questions you may have regarding your veneers.

Follow post-treatment instructions

When you get your veneers, it's essential to follow any post-treatment instructions. That may include avoiding certain foods or habits temporarily, taking prescribed medications, or using special oral care products.

Following these instructions will ensure the success and longevity of your veneers. Remember, proper care and maintenance are essential to keep your veneers looking their best and to maximize their lifespan. By following these tips and maintaining regular dental care, you can enjoy a beautiful and confident smile with your veneers.
