Treatment Options for TMJ

Pinpointing the exact cause of TMJ disorders can be difficult, but there are several treatment options available if you’re experiencing ongoing symptoms like jaw pain, stiffness, or locking.

At the Center for Implant & Esthetic Dentistry in Beverly Hills, California, our dentist Dr. Ramin Mahallati and our team of dental professionals offer treatment for TMJ and other restorative and cosmetic dentistry services.

Treatment options and relief for TMJ symptoms

TMJ affects everyone differently. For many people with mild jaw pain, the symptoms are temporary and usually go away with self-care methods like taking over the counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories to control inflammation.

There are a few factors that can contribute to TMJ disorders. Treatment usually depends on the severity of your symptoms, as well as the underlying causes, like an injury to the temporomandibular joint for example. A blow to the jaw commonly causes TMJ symptoms.

Possible causes and risk factors for TMJ

While it’s possible to develop TMJ without an obvious underlying cause, there are a few factors that can increase your risk of developing it:

Schedule an appointment with our team if your TMJ symptoms are moderate to severe, persist for more than a few days, or don’t improve with rest or self-care treatments at home.

Depending on your circumstances, Dr. Mahallati may recommend one or more of the following TMJ treatments:

In rare cases, surgery is sometimes recommended to correct joint damage if conservative treatments are unsuccessful or no longer effective.

Can you prevent TMJ?

It depends. For starters, preventive dentistry checkups are the best way to monitor your oral health and to catch any problems as soon as possible. For example, if your TMJ symptoms are caused by cartilage deterioration, an early diagnosis can lower the risk of long term and irreversible damage.

If your TMJ symptoms are caused by teeth grinding or clenching your jaw while you sleep during times of stress, practicing relaxation techniques or a dental appliance like a nightguard can offer protection.
